2017 Preview | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Mobile Christian completed the 2016 season with a 13-2 record. Last year Mobile Christian captured the region one title and a number one seed in the Class 3A playoffs. They finished region play with a 7-0 record. It was the first region championship for the Leopards since the 2000 season. The Leopards won four consecutive playoff games to reach the Class 3A State Championship game only to fall just short of claiming a title. They were defeated by Piedmont at the Alabama Super Seven 22-12 in Auburn. No team at Mobile Christian ever won more games in a season than the thirteen victories last year. The last time they won as many was back in 1995. The 485 points scored by the Leopards last year were a team record in a single season. The defense was very stingy last season as Mobile Christian ranked 9th in the AHSAA. The defense allowed only 11.3 points a game. Over the past two seasons the Leopards have gone 23-4 and will be looking to continue that winning tradition. Since 2010, Mobile Christian has gone a combined 57-29. Their 66.0% winning percentage ranks 9th in Class 3A over the past seven seasons. Over the past 25 seasons, Mobile Christian has managed to compile a record of 176-112. Their 61.0% winning percentage ranks 9th in Class 3A and 83rd in the AHSAA. The Leopards are led by head coach Ronnie Cottrell who is entering his second season at the helm. His team finished with a 13-2 record in his first season at Mobile Christian. The Leopards saw improvement from a 10-2 record the season before coach Cottrell arrived. Under his direction the Leopards have qualified for the playoffs once. They have won one region crown with Coach Cottrell. Coach Cottrell's overall record as a head football coach in twelve season stands at 76-59 (56.3%). Over the course of his career, Coach Cottrell's teams have qualified for the playoffs a total of seven times and won five region championships. The Mobile Christian Leopards will play in Class 3A region one during the 2017 season. The Leopards enter the 2017 season riding a 9 game regular season winning streak. They have won 12 straight games on their home turf at Harrison Field. The Leopards should be considered one of the favorites for the region one championship this season and a home game in the first round of the playoffs. Don't be surprised if the Leopards are making another deep run into the playoffs. Senior Troy Young returns after rushing for 1,149 yards on 177 carries and scoring 15 touchdowns. Also returning is Junior Eric Poellnitz who caught 39 passes for 807 yards and 10 TDs. Senior Keith Gallmon Jr. returns after catching 17 passes for 325 yards and 8 TDs. The Leopards open the 2017 season at home against non-region opponent Lighthouse Christian FL on Thursday, August 24 at Harrison Field. Mobile Christian and Lighthouse Christian FL have met a total of 3 times on the football field. The Leopards have a 2-1-0 record against Lighthouse Christian FL. They last met in 2016 with Lighthouse Christian FL winning by a score of 6-49. Mobile Christian returns 3A All-State Senior defensive back Keith Gallmon. He was named to the second team last season. College prospects include: Andres Fox (6-4, 232) defensive end, Keith Gallmon Jr. (6-0, 191) safety, | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
